Green Circle Salons provide the world’s first and North America’s only solution to recover and repurpose beauty salon waste. Up to 95% of the items typically considered waste can now be recycled and reused. Hair, foils, colour tubes, aerosol cans, leftover colour and other chemicals as well as personal protective equipment don’t have to end up in the landfill, instead they get a second chance. Sparrow Hair is proud to be the first hair salon in Fernie to become certified sustainable by Green Circle Salons. It is an extension of our commitment to protecting our environment and community in a responsible and sustainable way.
We sort our salon waste into four bins and when full these go to the Green Circle Salon plant for processing.
Is typically processed into hair-booms and used in oil spill clean-up efforts. Since there isn’t always the need for hair-booms, Green Circle’s Research & Development department has come up with their own bioplastic produced from hair, that will be used to produce garbage bins and other plastic objects.
Did you know that a hair salon can produce up to 646 pounds (almost 300 kg) of hair colour waste a year ? Thanks to Green Circle, we are able to keep leftover hair colour, bleach, etc. out of our drains and thus our waters. The chemicals are broken down with a complex process that removes the water, which typically is up to 93% of the hair colour. The clean water is then returned into the system. The remaining chemical material is incinerated and turned into clean energy.
Metal waste is decontaminated and then recycled into items like bicycle frames, car parts and playground equipment.
Due to Covid-19 pandemic, face masks have become a part of our everyday life in the salon, which unfortunately also means added waste. Thanks to Green Circle’s PPE Initiative the disposable masks don’t end up in the landfill or in our oceans. Together with gloves they will be recycled and used to create clean energy.
